PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
I’ve been working in various forms of education since 2013 when I worked as an undergraduate peer mentor in career counseling at Northeastern’s business school. Over the years, I’ve worked in alternative education environments, juvenile detention centers, probation day-reporting centers, and college education in Chicago, LA, and Boston.
I have a Master of Social Work degree in Clinical Social Work from Boston College, a Master of Fine Arts degree in Writing for the Screen and Stage from Northwestern University, and a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and Media Screen Studies from Northeastern University. I took a Trauma and Crisis Counseling course as a guest student in UMass Boston’s Master of Science Mental Health Counseling program and received a Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy certification from the Medical University of South Carolina in 2022. I have also received an 8-week Community Teaching Artist Certification through California State University LA in November 2020, where I expanded my professional knowledge of trauma-informed pedagogy and further developed lesson plans that create safe spaces in classrooms. I offer original programming through Amalgamate Arts, which focuses on trauma-informed, evidence-based, healing-centered psychoeducation and creative expression.
I believe that as a writer, educator, and social worker I have a responsibility to create meaningful and inclusive content, curricula, and community spaces. When writing, I work to authentically represent people from marginalized communities on screen, banish disease-related stigma, and spark thoughtful dialogue around new perspectives. When teaching, I work hard to formulate digestible syllabi that encourage students to challenge and question what they may see as problematic in the media they consume, what about it might perpetuate and normalize destructive cycles of misogyny, colorism, systemic wealth disparities, racial injustices, etc., and what they can do as artists to create consciously and make positive change in the world. When practicing social work, I bring lived experience, navigating complex PTSD as an interracial adoptee, to everything I do. It is important to me to center the voices and experiences of the clients I work with. The main interventions that inform my current practice are narrative therapy, expressive arts therapy, TF-CBT, DBT, and motivational interviewing. I am also looking into pursuing continued education in EMDR and brainspotting.
